Follow the Money: Foundations and Politics

Katherine Kersten writes in her Sunday column in the Minneapolis Star Tribune about the rise of leftist independent political groups in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and elsewhere.

Union money is funding much of the effort, but as I documented in this post about the donations of the non-profit Tides Foundation to two of these political groups, non-profits are another important source of money.

Of course, in the fever-swamp world of the Star Tribune comments section we hear about the same handful of right-wing groups.  Truth be told, the reason you hear so much about the Koch Brothers, etc. is that these are the only folks on the right.  For every Koch brother, there are 100 billionaires on the left funding all manner of causes.

But here is the point:  in theory, unions are answerable to their members, corporations answer to their shareholders, but to whom do foundations answer?
