Yesterday was a big day of no progress in Minnesota's budget stalemate/partial government shutdown. Our "elder statesmen" issued their "split the difference" plan of higher taxes for everyone. A "temporary tax"? Remember: the Spanish American War (1898-1898). Spanish American War Tax (1898-2006).
The Minneapolis Star Tribune issued another editorial pleading with Republicans to accept Gov. Mark Dayton's latest offer, arguing "a bad deal beats no deal." Expect a similar editorial after each offer Dayton makes.
Rather more useful was an opinion piece in the Star Tribune from true "third-wayers", Tim Penny and Tom Horner, former third-party candidates for Minnesota Governor. They call for a "lights on" bill to keep all of the government open while negotiations continue, an offer the Republicans have made and the Governor has rejected.
Rather than driving over the cliff or braking short, Messrs Penny and Horner, suggest we veer in another direction and "understand that government has to be redesigned, not just made smaller, for Minnesota to succeed in job growth and business creation." I'm not sure where we are going to find these "non-partisan" experts to rely on, though.
