Fresh from his triumph in the pages of the Wall Street Journal, David Strom has an opinion piece appearing in today's Minneapolis Star Tribune (Saturday seems to be his lucky day). David muses on why Republicans seemed to have found a backbone of late.
In short,
"Republicans are determined to avoid insolvency -- the point at which we can no longer pay all our bills. The only way to do that in the long run is to scale down spending. And the only way to scale down spending is to start insisting that our political establishment give up the illusion that we can continue business as usual..."
"Republicans have to play hardball in the current environment. We see the country speeding toward a cliff others have already gone over."
The comments are just what you would expect them to be from the readers of the paper known as "The Star and Sickle." Commenters seemed determined to prove the adage that "bad discourse drives out good."
The scores of angry comments directed at David are very illustrative of the "shoot the messenger" quality of our political discourse these days. From Greece to Ireland to St. Paul many folks just cannot admit that the modern welfare state has run its course. Something new will take its place, but change is scary. David is just the man delivering the message.
