Detroit Free City

The Detroit Free Press carries a story about downtown Detroit businesses offering cash incentives to employees who wish to live downtown, near work, under a "Live Downtown" program.  It's being spun as an effort to create "smart growth"-style "density", but it is really an effort to repopulate a fast emptying city.

While an interesting idea, I prefer my Detroit Free City, free-trade, tax-exempt Charter City concept.

(Not to be confused with Detroit Rock City, the movie tribute to the rock band Kiss and coming of age in 1970's Detroit or the Detroit Free Press, the newspaper mentioned earlier in this post.)

Meanwhile, Detroit Mayor Bing is moving ahead with his plan to save the city one neighborhood at a time.
