Follow the Money: When Philanthropy Goes Wrong

In the weekend Wall Street Journal, Adam Meyerson has a column (subscription required) headlined "When Philanthropy Goes Wrong," describing how foundations stray from the founders' intent.  Meyerson quotes from Henry Ford II's resignation letter from the board of his grandfather's Ford Foundation.  Ford II wrote in 1977,

"The foundation is a creature of capitalism, a statement that, I'm sure, would be shocking to many professional staff people in the field of philanthropy.  It is hard to discern recognition of this fact in anything the foundation does."

Shocking and true words 35 years ago.  Shocking and true words today.
